The word this week is GUMPTION: I define Gumption as the culture of no-nonsense effective communication, and the spirit of excellence. It is an old Scottish word used sparingly in the modern world of today. The word originated in 1719 meaning common sense, shrewdness, and acuteness of practical understanding.  It also meant drive and initiative possibly connected to the Middle English word “gome” and from the Old Norse word “gaumr” both meaning heed and attention.  In English, the word heed means to pay attention to and take notice. The English word attention means the action of dealing with or taking special care of someone or something.  The sense of initiative of the word is first recorded in 1812. The related word “gumptious” is an adjective where its usage provided clear evidence of the word from 1823. A person with gumption is self-aware and always at the forefront of listening, learning, leading and watching to see what is just ahead and meeting it head-on with gusto. A person with gumption has cast away all transgressions committed and has a new heart and a new spirit.  They are servants to others and always speak the truth. Gumption does not come naturally.  You are not born with it.  Integrity is the number one characteristic of a person of gumption.  The byproduct of integrity is trust.  You can rely on a person with gumption who is following the essentials of a fulfilling, meaningful, joyful, and rich rewarding relationship.  They are loving and committed to a well-balanced full life.  The have a serving attitude and a good heart for all people.  They are open and honest and approach people with friendship and cheer.  A gumptious person is patient, enduring, sustaining, preserving, with vibrant hope there is victory in the end.  The possibilities that emerge from the circumstances of life through the endurance to carry on to the finish line. They are close and together in their relationships and have a common leadership with integrity and empathy.

The Greatest Generation were people with Gumption.  The term was originated in Tom Brokaw’s book in 1998. The generation lived through the Great Depression, World War II and a new era of American power and wealth. The changes this generation lived through will forever be marked as some of the most pivotal moments in history.

The word this week is MINDSET which is a mental attitude, a desire, an inclination or a habit. It is a way of thinking or a certain outlook on life. The view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you live your life. Some define it as a mental frame or a lens that selectively organize and encode information pushing an individual toward a unique way of understanding an experience or guiding one toward an action or response. There are several types of mindsets; abundance, positive, growth and fixed. Mindset is how you see the world and Attitude is how you interact with the world. The opposite of Mindset is ignorant or plain dumb. Research shows that mindset plays a significant role in determining the outcome of life.  Understanding life and how it works, adapting to the many changes and shifting your mindset can change your health, decrease stress and aid in becoming more resilient. Your mindset forms an interaction of our thoughts and emotion and images of your life The mindset adopted has everything to do with judgment on anything. WHEN YOU APPROACH THE DAY WITH POSITIVITY AND PURPOSE, EVERYTHNG CHANGES.  YOUR PERCEPTIONS OF LIFE DETERMIN YOUR RESPONSE IN ALL SITUATIONS.

We should develop a habit of gratitude. Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions.Gratitude is defined as a feeling of appreciation or thankfulness. It is a warm feeling of thankfulness for the world or a specific person. With gratitude we think of the things we have instead of always reaching out for more.  We need to focus on what we have instead of what we lack or do not have I am on a journey of gratitude. Zig Ziglar stated “gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions.  The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude”.

We need to make gratitude a habit.  Each day I write down three things I am grateful for on a list.  I keep the list in my daily journal.  Each day the three things are different from the ones before on the list.

In the European Journal of Social Psychology, the author quoted it takes 66 days to create a habit.  Keep the list for 66 days and you will have 198 items you are grateful for and your mind will constantly be looking for new things to be grateful and thankful for. There are three ways to practice gratitude.  One, notice things and look for the good; look for things and appreciate them. Secondly, absorb or savor things, really pay attention. Thirdly, express gratitude by writing in a journal  each day three things you are grateful for.

Word of the Week: Endurance

Week beginning March 28, 2022; each week we discuss a principle or value of the Qualities of Success. We suggest you use the Word of The Week in your thoughts, deeds and actions.  You might currently possess the quality and desire to develop it to a higher level.  You could replace a bad habit with a good habit. Write an action step and use it daily to develop the Quality in your life.

The word this week is ENDURANCE: the mental or moral strength to stand against and resist opposition, danger, stress or hardship.

Steps to develop Endurance can be developed and increased by exercising an inner strength in everyday life. Endurance is the ability to deal effectively with all challenges.  It is the will power and self-discipline to persevere. You can use mental toughness exercises to learn to tolerate being uncomfortable. Do the thing you do not want to do for only five minutes and be present with the discomfort. Do not ignore your feelings

Many centuries ago, a woman almost underestimated the power of one.  She thought things were too far gone.  She did not think there was anything she could do before all the Jews would be killed.

The woman’s name was Esther, the Jewish wife of the Persian king. He was the one about to be tricked into making a disastrous decision and exterminate all the Jews. Esther was adopted and her father realized she alone held the key to the heart of the King. Her adoptive father appealed to her conscience and stated to her” if you remain silent at this time, you and the house of your father will perish (Esther 4:14).

Esther listened to the request of her father.  He got her attention with his final line “And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14)

That statement convinced her.  Esther broke long standing protocol, marched into the throne room of the king and spoke her mind to the king.  Esther alone rescued the Jews from being killed. One woman, one voice, saved an entire nation.  She was willing to stand in the gap, to get personally involved, to the point of great sacrifice.  Esther stated in 4:16 “If I perish, I perish”. Esther had the mental and moral strength and courage to stand against the protocol and the laws of the day to save the Jewish Nation.

Esther never thought SOMEONE ELSE SHOULD BE DOING THIS, NOT ME.  SHE DID NOT IGNORE THE NEED BECAUSE OF THE RISK.  Sacrifice is the stuff people with Endurance and Durability are made. They make a difference.

How much difference can one make?

I am only one, but still, I am one.

I cannot do everything, but still, I can do something.

And because I cannot do everything,

I WILL NOT REFUSE TO DO THE SOMETHING THAT I CAN DO.

(Edward Everett Hale, American author, late 1900s)

Word of the Week: Foresight

Week beginning March 21, 2022; each week we discuss a principle or value of the Qualities of Success. We suggest you use the Word of The Week in your thoughts, deeds and actions.  You might currently possess the quality and desire to develop it to a higher level.  You could replace a bad habit with a good habit. Write an action step and use it daily to develop the Quality in your life.

The word this week is FORESIGHT:  the ability to predict an action or event that will happen or be needed in the future. It is a learned skill and is becoming a required skill.  It is when we look for trends, read signs, or test our own assumptions. Foresight is the ability to predict.  It gives us the power to shape our futures even in turbulent times. Without it, we can not prepare for the future.  Effective foresight is important for life circumstances. People and especially leaders will be able to take advantage of opportunities and to avoid problems. An example is knowing to save money for college or put money in an emergency fund if you lose your job.

Steps to develop foresight:

1. Identify possibilities, probable events and early indicators

2. Prepare a plan for each possible event

3. Research and search for emerging trends

4. Monitor each possible future event.
